Chapter Twelve

Zo

“How long that car been out there?” I asked Kaylen once I walked into her spot.

“Huh?” she asked me as she fumbled through her purse.

“That car,” I repeated. I opened the blinds so that she could see outside. “That car in front of the house across the street. How long has it been sitting there?”

She looked up and gave me a crazy face. “How the hell would I know? They not here for me, they here to see those hippies across the street,” she replied with a shrug then went back to looking for whatever it was she was searching for.

“That’s my point,” I said under my breath, looking out the window at the car. “Since when do hippies ride around in a Benz on twenty-twos with black ass tints?”

What was really making me feel suspicious about the car was the fact that when I left my spot, there was a black Suburban parked out front with big ass platinum rims on it and black tints. I couldn’t see who was inside, but it seemed out of place for my neighborhood. I didn’t live in the hood. Once I was able to make it out, I didn’t want to ever go back and I never did.

“Why you look so damn paranoid? Will you stop looking out my damn blinds like we cooking crack up in here or something?” Kaylen huffed at me. She was still rooting around in her purse.

“Lost some money? Jewelry?” I asked her with a raised eyebrow. “What you looking for, Kay?”

“My damn wallet,” she said quietly.

“Yeah, I bet. Where is your damn mama?” I asked, walking into the kitchen. I pulled open the refrigerator and grabbed an ice cold water out. As soon as I twisted the cap and put it to my lips to drink, Kaylen’s mama walked up from behind me, scaring me to death and I started choking.

“Why you asking about me, nigga?’ she asked, showing off her gummy mouth and decaying teeth. Her hair was standing straight up on her head as I had become accustomed to seeing it, but she actually did look a little better. She was at least wearing clothes that fit, so it seemed that Kaylen had taken her shopping.

“No reason, Delores. Kaylen missing her wallet. You wouldn’t have happened to see it, huh?” I asked her pointedly.

“Zo, don’t start that shit,” Kaylen warned. She walked over to where I was and gave me a hug and kiss. I returned the kiss and shrugged.

“It was an innocent question,” I lied then tapped Kaylen on the ass. I still teased Delores from time to time but over the past couple weeks, I’d learned that when it came to her mother, Kaylen would forever be on her side so it was best for me to just drop the issue. Delores would hang herself at some point and I was sure of it.

“Well, I got errands to run so I’ll see you two later,” Delores said, scratching at her neck.
